Jen Brown

As humans we are forever fascinated with ourselves, and so, I paint people. I have a MA in Art History, I ravenously consume and study images, and I wish to engage with Art History in my work. I use the familiar postures, symbolism, and constructs of Western Art, yet the figures are contemporary, thereby placing the works in both the past and the present. Images are carefully planned, I stage the actors in a scene, and then I paint them according to the laws of nature and perspective. My intent is to create beautiful oil paintings that marvel the viewer, yet it is also important to me that my work is politically relevant and speaks to a number of big-picture issues facing our society.
