“To see a World in a grain of sand and Heaven in a wild flower…” is to love the Earth. My art springs from a desire to commune with and honor Nature, through process, materials, and with the symbols and images that emerge. My aim is to breathe life into ideas and images that re-enchant the World, this beautiful blue marble that sparkles with our existence.
I often work creatively with materials that are of the Earth, including plant and animal fibers such as mulberry bark, eucalyptus, maple, and sumac leaves, silk and wool. I find the raw, natural fibers embody a life force, a force that can carry messages, tell stories, participate and contribute to the artwork’s ultimate creative trajectory. I see each work as a symbolic study, a map, in a cosmological search for meaning, to navigate the choppy waters of our current times.
My art is inspired by a lifelong fascination and study of archetypal images, symbols and patterns. I begin paintings with visual ideas and metaphors found amidst the treasures of my day-to-day experiences. I see these paintings as a kind of call and response with Nature and the creative process.
Whether working in oil paint or mixed media with natural fibers, a mythic story starts to emerge, morphing and evolving, guiding me, offering messages towards new perceptions of myself and the world. In essence, each work is a labor of love, a tribute to the divine feminine, as I ponder the multivalent expressions of the face of nature, ‘the anima mundi,’ or the world soul.
