Dotty Hawthorne

On my first trip to France I was startled to realize that I “knew” the French landscape because I had studied and delighted in many of the paintings of the French Impressionists. My current passion as an artist is to capture the essence of the landscape of Oregon and Washington in a way that will produce such “knowing.” I love the shapes of the waterways, the evergreens, the maples and elms and the changing seasons with the parade of spring flowers, the clear days of summer, magnificent colors of fall, and the sculptural quality of winter.

Fascinated by the complexity of created forms, the interaction of light, shadow and atmosphere and the subtleties of color, I apply these elements to soft foggy mornings, high key light at noon and strong shadows and deep color in late day. I believe that artwork featuring the natural world in which we live will foster a deep joy in the privilege of being here, encourage a deeper visual knowledge of the landscape, and develop a longing to preserve the natural gifts of creation. Robert Henri has stated in THE ART SPIRIT that he believes “Art is the means to jolt ourselves and others awake to the wonder of being alive in this stupendous universe.” I aim to bring this spirit to the Northwest.

Dotty paints primarily in pastel and oil. She has taken part in juried plain air painting festivals, demonstrated at art associations and has juried art competitions. Her paintings have been featured in nationally distributed publications such as CALIFORNIA LIGHT (California Art Club), INTERNATIONAL ARTIST Magazine, SOUTHWEST ART Magazine, and SPLASH 5; the Glory of Color. She is a Signature Member os the Pastel Society of the West Coast and was an Out of State Member of the California Art Club.
