Sarah Gonzalez

I am a painter because I love the color and details I see in the world around me. Focusing on them brings me out of my head and to a meditative state, an escape from the anxiety and depression I sometimes experience.

Painting nature and wildlife cause me to meditate on what the Creator has made for us. I wonder at the care and beauty he used. I seek to showcase that beauty by cropping in my subjects to give them a feeling of a portrait where its unique details and colors are displayed. These “Portraits” remind us what a gift nature is and of humanity’s responsibility to be good stewards of it. Recently I have branched out from my usual oil painting to working with acrylics and watercolors. Learning the techniques of these mediums has inspired me to be more adventurous in my artmaking. It inspired me to try painting more landscapes.

I achieve the bright colors in my painting through a method called glazing. Glazing is when multiple layers of paint are on top of each other. The previous colors shine up through the paint above. This technique allows me to create all the little nuances of color I see in nature.
