Suzanne Flynn

I am fascinated by the effects of line and space to elicit emotion or suggest an image. I like to divide space into segments that collectively suggest an image bordering on the representational. My process is contemplative and spontaneous. I begin with a black surfaced canvas or board and attach different media such as previously painted paper or heavily laid gesso. From there I add color and begin to develop areas of the whole. I heavily work the surface adding layer upon layer of paint and use ink and crayon to add definition. Sometimes I use wax or thick acrylic medium to create luminosity. Many times, during the process, I step back, immerse myself in what is developing, and decide on my next steps. Finally, when the image is almost fully developed, I add lines in black acrylic or ink to finalize the result.
