Beate Scheller

Being a Printmaker contains my interest in craftsmanship and design, influenced by elements of architecture, and nature. My idea, developing an art piece is not limited to one technique or one typical style, and to work physically on a Lithography stones to create an art piece is very pleasing for me. Also I work with copper or zinc plates, etch them or make a drypoint image. Sometimes combining these different techniques is another way to express an idea, or I add colored pencil, watercolor or colored paper, called chine collé, to my print. The contrast of architecture and landscapes, geometrical shapes and pattern with organic forms tempts, and excites me to create my artwork. On the other hand emerging the idea through pattern, style and fantasy elements into a print is not the end of my creative process. The final prints, and even a sketch inspire me again. They lead to new ideas and then evolve into new images. For example an image is developed out of a pattern from a sketch of a manhole. Enlarging, twisting and multiplying the pattern, lines and shapes form that sketch becomes a creature like an owl or snake. Sometimes my print is an upside-down piece, where the viewer can turn it around to find a new and a different perspective. Then to see the surprised look makes me smile and encourage me to develop my ideas into new images, and printing new work. In this way I want to fuel the viewer’s imagination, so they want to look again! To see the spectators looking twice, observing the color and the different details than at the first glimpse is my goal.
