Karl M. Haugen

My interest in art began at a young age. A fourth grade teacher recognized some extra talent and used it to keep us quiet. From then on I kept this obsession with me. Though I chose a career in forestry and maintenance my motto was “Always Keep a Day Job, save up and find time to expand my art”. That time is now. Using my travel and experiences in the desert and forest putting out wildfires from the air and ground allowed me to gather many images of wildlife and landscape that influence my work.

I retired in 2016 and continue to hone my skills. I am always learning and discovering new things. I am very lucky to have found a home and community of very talented people to begin this new
Relating the importance of the natural environment is my goal for people to take home with them. Whether they purchase or remember what they saw on the wall in the Gallery. Watercolor gives me the desired effect that you cant get with another medium. There is an expressiveness and movement in the use of water and pigment.

I use 140 lbs watercolor paper a dry brush technique and do detailed pencil sketches to prepare my paintings. Some masking fluids are used on occasion with lots of small details enhances led by layers of color.
