Shannon L. Oldham

In my painting, I have always been most interested in color and form. Even when I paint landscapes, I am most fascinated by the way colors interact, and both positive and negative spaces are important to me. My paintings wrap around the under framing, just as the canvas does and adds a subtle three-dimensional quality (which is not evident in slides). My favorite medium is acrylic on canvas. My style changes to fit the piece I’m working on, but the color is always there. I start with a plan – pencil sketches on cards transferred to the canvas – but the paintings evolve as I’m working. I am inspired by stories and myths, music, landscapes, figures. Most recently I have been working on a series of six 36”x 36” canvases called “Spirits Rising”, about people’s aspirations and perseverance. When I am in my studio with a brush in my hand, I feel as if I disappear into my work, and it brings me peace and contentment. I want to share those feelings with the people who look at my paintings. I hope to bring them, at least for the moment, the same happiness, inspiration, fun, joy, and hope that I experience when I’m painting.
