Jennifer Lichtenberg

Creating and making have always been a part of who I am, but the art-making process for me is one where I continually have to challenge myself to push through fears, insecurities and vulnerabilities. I have found that the other side of resistance and fear is joy…lots of joy.

My work spans collage, book-art and abstract painting.

In my abstract acrylic paintings, I explore color, texture and movement. I have been recently developing a new technique where I apply paint to two canvases, then dip them into each other multiple times, which creates patterns, textures and movement. It is a process where I have to let go of control and allow the painting to have its own voice. As I’m working on a painting, I find it takes on a life of its own. The wisest thing I can do is to listen to what the painting is saying. If I feel like a painting hasn’t yet “said what it wants to”, I continue to work on it, adding layer after layer of combinations of colors, until I feel that the painting is finished, and the effects have been achieved.

In my collage and book art work, as opposed to my abstract painting. I explore the juxtaposition of image and word to create new meanings, often adding color as a symbol to reinforce the meaning.

My hope is to inspire and provoke, while awakening beauty and hope.
