Robin Hostick

We’re all connected to the land. I paint sublime landscapes to deepen that connection and bring beauty into our daily lives.

Artistically, I strive to evoke positive emotions, a sense of wellbeing, awe, wonder, belonging and love that emanates from the land. In some ways it’s a romantic view, and I find inspiration in the epic portrayals of the 18th and 19th century romantic landscape painters. I’m equally moved by the impressionists who overturned stylistic conventions.

Today, a century and a half later, we see the land with different eyes through the lens of a different culture. In this century, we’re witnessing deep changes in our relationship with the land. For that reason, I regard the landscape as a most contemporary subject. I hope to inspire stewardship and caring attitudes about our natural wonders by building connections between people and special places.

Nearly all my subjects are real places, each with a personality and unique qualities that change with seasons and weather. I strive to bring these landscapes to life using energetic marks and intuitive working habits. Although I emphasize certain qualities to more fully express my perception of a place and time, I see each painting as a sort of portrait or time capsule.

Though perhaps romantic, there is no reaching for bygone eras to be found in my paintings. Only a sublime, natural system of which we are a part, and within which we have the great fortune to thrive.
